Understanding Liver Disease in Dogs and Cats

Causes of Liver Disease

Liver disease in dogs and cats can have various causes, including infections, toxins, certain medications, metabolic disorders, and even genetic factors. Identifying the underlying cause is crucial in determining the most appropriate treatment plan for your pet.

Clinical Signs of Liver Disease

Recognizing the symptoms of liver disease in dogs and cats is essential for early intervention. Common clinical signs include jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, increased drinking and urination, and changes in behaviour or mental alertness. If you notice any of these signs, it's important to seek veterinary attention promptly.

Diagnosis and Tests

Diagnosing liver disease requires a comprehensive approach. Our experienced veterinarians may perform a thorough physical examination, conduct blood tests, including liver function tests and complete blood count, and utilize imaging techniques such as ultrasound to assess the liver's condition.

Laboratory Evaluation

Laboratory evaluation plays a crucial role in understanding the extent and severity of liver disease. Specific blood tests help assess liver enzyme levels and identify potential abnormalities that aid in the diagnosis.

At Evervet, we prioritise thorough and accurate laboratory evaluations to diagnose and manage liver disease in pets effectively. Our caring and expert team utilizes advanced diagnostic tools, including haematology and liver enzyme tests, to gain valuable insights into your furry companion's health.

Haematology

Haematology is a branch of laboratory medicine that focuses on studying blood and its components. This crucial diagnostic tool allows us to assess your pet's overall health and detect any abnormalities that may indicate liver disease or other underlying conditions.

A complete blood count (CBC) is a common haematological test used in the evaluation of liver disease. The CBC provides valuable information about your pet's red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Changes in the CBC may suggest anemia, infection, or inflammation, which can be related to liver disease.

Liver Enzymes

Liver enzyme tests are an integral part of diagnosing and monitoring liver disease in dogs and cats. These tests measure specific enzymes produced by the liver, such as alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT).

Elevated levels of liver enzymes in the blood can indicate liver damage or inflammation. ALT and AST are enzymes that leak into the bloodstream when liver cells are injured, while ALP and GGT are released when there is a problem with the bile ducts. These elevated enzyme levels help us identify and assess the severity of liver disease.

Histopathology

Histopathology involves the examination of liver tissue samples obtained through a biopsy or surgical procedure. These tissue samples are then processed, stained, and examined under a microscope by our skilled pathologists. The microscopic analysis provides detailed information about the liver's cellular structure and any abnormalities present, guiding us in identifying the underlying cause of the liver disease.

Histopathology plays a critical role in diagnosing and managing liver disease in pets. Liver diseases can have various causes, and accurately identifying the specific condition is essential for determining the most effective treatment approach. Histopathology helps us differentiate between different types of liver diseases, such as inflammation, fibrosis, or tumors, ensuring that we provide targeted and personalized care for your pet.

Treatment Options

The treatment approach for liver disease in dogs and cats depends on the specific cause and severity of the condition. Our caring team will work closely with you to create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your pet's needs.

Medication

In some cases, medication may be prescribed to manage symptoms and support liver function. Medications can include antioxidants, anti-inflammatory drugs, and medications to improve bile flow.

Nutrition

Proper nutrition is vital for pets with liver disease. We may recommend specially formulated diets from trusted brands like Hills or Royal Canin, designed to support liver health and provide essential nutrients.
