What is Palliative Care for Pets?

Palliative care is a holistic approach that focuses on managing pain, discomfort, and other symptoms to enhance your pet's well-being and happiness. Unlike curative treatments, palliative care aims to maintain your pet's comfort and quality of life, providing relief from pain and stress. Our expert veterinarians work closely with you to develop a personalised care plan that addresses your pet's unique needs and respects your family's wishes.

Does Your Pet Need Palliative Care?

As pets age, they may face various health challenges, just like humans. Palliative care is specially designed to enhance their quality of life and alleviate discomfort during these difficult times. If your pet has been diagnosed with a chronic or terminal illness, experiences age-related issues, or has a declining quality of life, palliative care can make a significant difference. At Evervet, we believe in helping your pets age gracefully, with dignity and love.

Signs Your Pet May Need Palliative Care

  • Chronic Pain: If your pet is experiencing chronic pain that cannot be fully resolved, palliative care can help manage the discomfort and improve their overall comfort.

  • Terminal Illness: For pets diagnosed with a terminal condition or advanced age-related ailments, palliative care can provide comfort and ease their journey.

  • Reduced Appetite or Mobility: If your pet is having trouble eating or moving around, palliative care can help address these issues and support their daily activities.

  • Weight Loss or Muscle Wasting: Palliative care can assist in maintaining your pet's weight and muscle mass, contributing to their strength and vitality.

  • Difficulty Breathing: Pets with respiratory issues can benefit from palliative care to ease their breathing and enhance their quality of life.

  • Changes in Behaviour: Noticeable shifts in your pet's behaviour, such as increased restlessness or withdrawal, may indicate the need for palliative support.

  • Poor Response to Treatment: If your pet is not responding well to conventional treatments, palliative care can be a gentle alternative to improve their comfort.

Health considerations

Disease Prevention

As pets age, they can start to develop diseases with minimal clinical signs initially, such as kidney disease and arthritis.  At Evervet we have a preventative monitoring program for older pets called Seniors Wellness. This involves 6 monthly health examinations and an annual blood test to try to detect these diseases earlier.  Just like with diabetes and kidney disease in people, if it is caught early, some lifestyle changes can be implemented to slow down the course of the disease, or in some cases avoid it from causing a significant impact on a pet's quality of life.

Viral Diseases

Discover essential insights into viral diseases affecting your dogs and cats at Evervet. Stay informed, be a proactive pet owner, and ensure your furry friends lead healthy, happy lives. Trust Evervet for reliable and concise guidance on pet health.

Kittens

A new kitten is a wonderful addition to a home.  They will need a course of vaccinations at 6-8 weeks, 10-12 weeks and 16 weeks of age.  Some preventative parasite control measures will need to be given during this early formative phase in your kitten’s life.  Stress-free handling of cats is an important part of the services we provide at Evervet

Puppies

Did you know that we have a puppy preschool available?  This is a wonderful introduction to puppy ownership and helps to socialise puppies to the smells and sounds of a vet clinic in a stress-free way.

Rabbit & Ferrets

We are not just about cats and dogs at Evervet. We love seeing other species for routine health checks and husbandry or dietary advice.  Rabbits and Ferrets are both susceptible to preventable diseases that we have vaccines against. Annual vaccines are recommended for both species (after a course of vaccines given as babies)

Immune Boosting

Discussing dietary supplements and changes that may help to improve your pet’s overall well-being is part of the all-encompassing service that we offer at Evervet.  If your pet is on dietary supplements, please discuss these with your veterinarian as they may interfere with some medications that need to be given.  This includes but is not limited to CBD oil, turmeric, dietary fatty acid supplements and vitamins.
